Welcome to the cruising blog of Wayne and Michele Sharp!

If you want to learn a little bit about cruising, satisfy your curiosity, live vicariously, or be entertained, I think you've come to the right place.

Feel free to ask questions or post comments in the comment section of each post; I will respond to all of them. You can also email us at reluctantsailor@me.com.

We've written a book based on the blog from our first journey in 2007 - Adventures of a Once Reluctant Sailor: A Journey of Guts, Growth, and Grace. It is available online from my website at reluctantsailor.net, and from Apostle Islands Booksellers, Copperfish Books, Amazon, and Barnes and Noble. Your local bookstore can also order it for you. We've included over 170 color and black and white photos.

E-mail problems

For some reason, we haven't been able to send emails today, so if you've emailed me and haven't gotten a response, it's probably sitting in my outbox. Meanwhile, there's a place for comments at the bottom of each post, so feel free to leave one if you wish.

  1. What a trip! and alot of work!! Sounds like the fresh air and the wind must be a Godsend-unless it gets too unruly. I can almost breathe the fresh air by the blogs you write. We have been very busy with the regular stuff in life. Jen and Chad will be having a baby in Jan. and Mesha and John are due the 1st of April. Chris and Nikki want to finish their family with one more addition and are trying. Help! I heard the other day of a mother that had 17 kids and 92 grandkids-not a goal for us! My(paula)dad has bladder cancer that was diagnosed in the last week and is refusing chemo and radiation but will have surgery to remove the bladder and wear a bag. Has caused some interesting movement of relationships in the family. My youngest sister took me out for my birthday and was apolgestic for the last 18 years(blow me over) and my bother from Oregon rode his recumbant bike 2000 miles to Aimes Iowa and then came to Mn. to visit family-which caused somemore hassles among family members that God turned for good. Since June have have beendistance walking and using the incline alot on the treadmill-see if it helps any. Jim and I have a new hobby-walking around a lake each weekend-his disc thats been trouble in his back was pretty well healed and then it seems to have slipped out the other side of the disc. Walking is good for him though. So far thats whats going on here. Thanks for letting us go with you vicariously though your blog-praying for your safety. love Jim and Paula Good

  3. Hi Michele & Wayne!
We're in Montreal just a jump away. We have a great wireless connection here, so we finally got to catch up on your journey. We really enjoyed hearing about your trip! I updated our blog today, so you can check it out when you get on-line. If you need a slip just before the Beauharois Canal, try the Valleyfield Marina (it has a different name on the plotter 450-371-9144 open til 8pm). They also have charts, but there's an even better place in Montreal - McGill Marine on PL D'Youville & Rue St.Peirre. They have all the tide books and anything else you might need. We've gotten some great advice from people who live down the river on where to anchor & dock; we'll pass it on if it's good. Pay special attention to currents coming up river toward the old harbour - it's on the chart. It sounds like you might catch up with us - that would be fun. We sure know what you mean about the energy it takes to slow down!! Fair Winds - Rachael & Claus on SV Kyanna

  4. Wayne and Michele,

I just got back to Phoenix after being in MN since July 25th. I have been reading your blog and catching up on your adventure. And what an adventure it is! It is fun to read about it and know that you are safe. Your pictures are glorious! God bless you!

Back in Phoenix and looking forward to getting involved in some things here and meeting some new people. I started a golf class yesterday. We will see! We have found a Lutheran church that we are going to try out. It is one of these big mega churches, not really my style, but they have a lot of programs and many ways to get involved. Bob and I signed up for the Alpha class and are looking forward to that. I remember that both of you were teachers for that class. I will join the choir and try out a women's circle. I also found a newcomer's club that I will join. Things are looking up. Our pool is under construction and we have lots of visitors scheduled for fall and winter. Hopefully, when you complete your voyage, you can come for a visit, too. Bob's job is going well, but I say and the kids agree, he is just not as much fun anymore!

We did have a wonderful family vacation with Mike, Jess, Hunter, Kylee, Megan, my mom, my sister and brother-in-law at Arrowwood in Alexandria. Lots of golf and waterpark activities. It was fun to be together.

Time for me to head to Curves. It will take some time to get back in shape after all the eating that has taken place in the past months!

We keep you in our prayers and think of you often.

    Love,
    Karen
