Welcome to the cruising blog of Wayne and Michele Sharp!

If you want to learn a little bit about cruising, satisfy your curiosity, live vicariously, or be entertained, I think you've come to the right place.

Feel free to ask questions or post comments in the comment section of each post; I will respond to all of them. You can also email us at reluctantsailor@me.com.

We've written a book based on the blog from our first journey in 2007 - Adventures of a Once Reluctant Sailor: A Journey of Guts, Growth, and Grace. It is available online from my website at reluctantsailor.net, and from Apostle Islands Booksellers, Copperfish Books, Amazon, and Barnes and Noble. Your local bookstore can also order it for you. We've included over 170 color and black and white photos.

Our last meal...

We decided days ago that dinner in Miami had to be at Joe's Stone Crab (not to be confused with Joe's Crab Shack), as we all had scrumptious memories of it from previous visits, so it wasn't by accident that we chose to dock at Miami Beach Marina, a block away. We knew it was a splurge (not just the dinner, but the marina), but justified it by saying it was our last dinner together, and also, it occurred to us, probably Wayne's and my last restaurant meal of the trip. We were not disappointed.

No more restaurants...no more provisioning...no more doing laundry at marinas...no more refueling...no more water tank refills...no more pump outs...Reality is setting in - we're almost home, less than a week away (three hours by car, but I don't let myself think about that)! When I think back over the past three and a half months, it almost seems like a dream. Did we really do all that? Well over 4000 miles traveled and less than 300 to go. Unbelievable!

Gary just left and it was sad to see him go. He's a great guy and we enjoyed his company.

  1. Hi you guys, Great pictures and super stories. Thanks for sharing your journey with us, it's almost like we have been there with you, but to bad we couldn't eat with you at Joe's Crab Shack. You've been blessed with a great trip and memories. Super sailing and memorable visits. Maybe someday...Now it's time to turn the corner for the home stretch. Hard to believe, over 4300 miles. Happy landing at P.G. and Happy Thanksgiving!

  2. Captian Wayne,
Saw the blog on the aborted entrance near Jacksonville. I could imagine the tension on board as that turnaround was made. That was some serious sailing Sir Wayne. I would guess that when you sleep in your bed at the house there will be a few times of bumping into the wall as you get your land legs back. And maybe a couple of times waking up in a cold sweat thinking you forgot to check the anchors.

  4. Wayne is a real pro at handling that boat. He's amazed more than a few people with his docking skills. Of course, the bow thrusters made all the difference in the world.
